Abia PDP Moves to Unseat Lawmaker Over Defection to Labour Party

0

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the defection of Isiala Ngwa South lawmaker, Rowland Dennis Chinwendu, to the Labour Party (LP), calling for his immediate removal from office.

Chinwendu’s defection was officially announced on the floor of the Abia State House of Assembly on Tuesday, days after speculation about his planned exit from the PDP.

In a swift response, PDP Publicity Secretary Eric Ikwuagwu issued a statement declaring the move “unethical and unconstitutional.” Citing Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Ikwuagwu argued that lawmakers who switch parties without a proven division or merger within their original party must vacate their seats.

“The Abia PDP remains intact, with no faction or merger to justify this defection,” the statement read.

The party vowed to formally petition the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Chinwendu’s seat vacant and initiate legal action to enforce constitutional provisions.
