2027 Showdown: Ardo Backs New Party Formation to Unseat Tinubu

The Convener of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), Dr. Umar Ardo, has advocated for the formation of a brand-new political party as the most effective strategy for the opposition coalition to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Ardo made this known on Wednesday during an interview on The Morning Show, a current affairs programme on Arise Television.

He revealed that while a majority within the opposition coalition are in favour of merging with an already existing political party, a growing bloc — including himself — strongly believes that starting afresh with a new political platform will give the coalition a cleaner, stronger identity.

“Predominant members and even leaders of the coalition support merging into an existing political party,” Ardo explained.
“However, another group, which I belong to, believes that registering a new political party for the coalition is the better approach.”

Ardo emphasized that this position is rooted in the desire to break free from the limitations and baggage of existing parties.

“We insist that our approach to establishing a new political party is the best option, and we find the argument for merging into another party unconvincing,” he added.

The opposition coalition talks have gained momentum in recent weeks, with several prominent political figures across party lines engaged in consultations aimed at forming a united front to challenge the APC in 2027.

While the merger versus new party debate continues, analysts say the opposition’s ability to unite around a clear strategy will be critical to mounting a credible challenge in the next election cycle.
