Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has disclosed that Labour Party’s Peter Obi is engaged in discreet but strategic political consultations aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the international lawyer and media executive said serious groundwork is ongoing among opposition figures, dismissing social media speculations and photo ops as distractions from the real political movements.
Adebayo hinted that multiple opposition parties are in underground talks, working towards forming a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He insisted that while social media buzz might focus on superficial meetings, the actual coalition plans are being carefully and deliberately crafted behind closed doors.
“What is going on now is quiet. The leaders of parties with real political structures are in talks,” he stated. “There must be one grand challenger against President Tinubu in 2027. And the person must carry along a vast majority of disadvantaged and disenchanted Nigerians.”
He noted that the SDP is already engaging other political forces outside its fold and expressed optimism about the progress being made.
On the issue of President Tinubu’s chances in 2027, Adebayo said the incumbent faces a steep challenge. According to him, Nigerians gave Tinubu a chance to govern, but the President’s performance so far indicates he may not retain power.
“President Tinubu is not a match for the Nigerian people,” Adebayo said. “He has a good trajectory to losing the 2027 election. With two years left, it’s clear he needs more than prayers to succeed.”
Asked specifically about Peter Obi’s role in the ongoing opposition discussions, Adebayo confirmed the former Anambra governor is actively involved but prefers to work away from the public eye.
“Peter Obi is serious-minded and disciplined. He avoids unnecessary media attention and focuses on strategic meetings. He knows what he’s doing,” he said.
On whether he would be willing to step down for Obi if needed, Adebayo responded diplomatically: “That will come later. But I like what he’s doing. He hasn’t said he dislikes what I’m doing either. I’m working with anyone who loves Nigeria.”
Adebayo concluded by urging the APC to focus less on holding onto power and more on serving the Nigerian people effectively.
“They shouldn’t be worried about losing the election. They should be worried about disappointing Nigerians,” he said.
