2027 Elections Will Be a Referendum on APC’s Failures — PDP Declares

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the 2027 general elections will serve as a national referendum on what it described as the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government’s failures in addressing insecurity, economic hardship, and democratic erosion.

Addressing journalists during an interactive session in Abuja on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, delivered a scathing assessment of the APC’s governance, asserting that Nigerians are suffering under the weight of misguided policies and unfulfilled promises.

“In two years, over 600 Nigerians have been killed. That’s on record. This government celebrates defections like it’s celebrating policy success — that’s an indictment,” Ologunagba said.

He emphasised that the PDP is actively repositioning itself as a credible alternative, committed to rescuing the country from the current administration’s “propaganda-driven governance” and restoring democratic accountability.

Ologunagba questioned the federal government’s economic management, especially the rationale behind the $24.5 billion loan request to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

“The president asked for a $24.5 billion loan to ease the impact of subsidy removal. Two years later, Nigerians are still suffering. Where is the money? Where are the results?” he asked.

He lamented that over 100 million Nigerians now live on less than $2 a day, accusing the government of compounding poverty instead of alleviating it.

The PDP spokesperson also slammed the APC for its failure to curb rising insecurity, and criticised President Bola Tinubu’s alleged comments expressing preference for a one-party state — a stance Ologunagba warned is dangerous to Nigeria’s democratic survival.

“Let me say it again: the idea of a one-party state must perish. It will not happen in this country,” he declared.

He further criticised the National Assembly for failing in its constitutional duty to provide checks and balances, accusing lawmakers of rubber-stamping executive decisions.

“The Senate President has become a choirmaster, singing praises while the people suffer,” he said, calling for greater legislative scrutiny of government policies.

Ologunagba outlined the PDP’s ongoing efforts to unify its structures in preparation for 2027, noting that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for June 30 will be another step in its reconciliation and rebuilding process.

He described the PDP’s internal organs — including the Governors’ Forum, Board of Trustees (BOT), National Working Committee (NWC), and National Assembly Caucus — as united in their resolve to reposition the party for leadership.

“One thing the NEC meeting signposts is the resilience, capacity, and orderliness the PDP is known for. We are determined — not just for this party, but for the sake of democracy in Nigeria,” he added.

Concluding his address, Ologunagba urged Nigerians not to lose faith in democracy, but to hold the APC government accountable for its actions.

“We are not in a monarchy. We are not in a one-party state. Nigerians deserve the freedom to pursue happiness, opportunity, and justice. Democracy is the only path to national progress,” he affirmed.

The PDP’s remarks set the stage for what is expected to be a heated political build-up to the 2027 general elections, as opposition parties rally to challenge the ruling APC’s grip on power.
