Governor Soludo Recalls His Journey to APGA, Urges New Members to Embrace the Movement
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has welcomed 15,000 former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), describing the party as more than just a political platform, but a people-driven movement.
Speaking at the formal defection ceremony held in Awka on Wednesday, Governor Soludo reflected on his own political journey, revealing that it took him a full year to decide to join APGA in 2013.
“The first political party I joined was the PDP. I was its governorship flag bearer in the 2010 election in Anambra. I worked with many of you during that time,” Soludo said. “It took me one year to decide to join APGA, and when I did, I was disqualified from contesting. But I persisted, because I knew APGA was my last bus stop. Today, I am the Governor of Anambra State and the National Leader of APGA.”
Highlighting APGA’s legacy, Soludo described the party as the first progressive political platform in Nigeria, registered in 2002, and deeply rooted in the values of equity and inclusiveness.
“APGA is more than a party—it is a movement where everybody is equal and no one is left behind,” he added, encouraging the new members to register at their ward levels and take advantage of APGA’s cooperative initiatives designed to economically empower members.
The State Chairman of APGA, Mr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, formally welcomed the defectors, praising Governor Soludo’s leadership style for attracting members from across political divides.
Also speaking, Mr. Chukwudi Umeaba, a former PDP State Chairman who led the decampees, said the decision to join APGA was inspired by Soludo’s visionary and people-centered governance.
“We are collapsing the PDP structure into APGA because we want to join the winning team. Our aim is to support Governor Soludo in delivering on his development agenda for Anambra,” Umeaba stated.
