Zelenskyy Slams Russia’s Deadly Missile Strike on Sumy, Urges Global Pressure to End War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned Russia’s latest missile strike on the northeastern city of Sumy, accusing Moscow of choosing violence over diplomacy and rejecting recent peace overtures, including a proposal from the United States for an unconditional ceasefire.

The Palm Sunday morning attack, which involved two ballistic missiles, claimed the lives of at least 34 people — including two children — and left 117 others injured. Many of the victims were gathered to observe the religious holiday ahead of Easter celebrations.

In a strongly-worded video message posted to X (formerly Twitter), President Zelenskyy described the bombing as a clear sign that the Kremlin prioritizes destruction over dialogue.

“This attack shows that the aggressor will not stop until it is met with enough pressure,” Zelenskyy said. “What’s missing right now is decisive global action.”

He expressed gratitude to world leaders, diplomats, and citizens who have reached out in solidarity and denounced the latest assault. He also emphasized the need for the international community to remain firm in holding Russia accountable for its continued aggression.

Zelenskyy pointed out that it has been a month since Russia rejected a U.S.-backed proposal for a full and unconditional ceasefire — a move he said demonstrates Moscow’s unwillingness to pursue peace.

“Despite the peace talks, Russia keeps launching ballistic missiles. They are not afraid,” he said. “Every Russian drone, missile, and bomb strikes not only Ukrainian soil but also diplomacy and the tireless efforts of those working to end this war.”

The Ukrainian leader warned that attacks continue daily across frontlines and urban centers, with dozens of Shahed drones deployed each night to target civilian infrastructure.

He concluded his address with a renewed call for global unity and pressure, insisting that only strong, coordinated international action can bring an end to the conflict and restore peace.
