Washington, D.C. – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued an apology to former U.S. President Donald Trump for a heated exchange that took place during a high-stakes Oval Office meeting, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff revealed on Monday.
Speaking in a Fox News interview, Witkoff confirmed that Zelenskyy’s letter of apology acknowledged the tense confrontation that disrupted the planned signing of a critical mineral deal between the U.S. and Ukraine.
“Zelenskyy sent a letter to the president. He apologized for that whole incident that happened in the office. I think that was an important step,” Witkoff stated.
The letter’s existence was first mentioned by Trump during his joint address to Congress last Tuesday. Witkoff emphasized that discussions between U.S., Ukrainian, and European representatives have been ongoing and described the latest developments as “progress.”
“I would hope that there’s a deal,” Witkoff added before departing for Saudi Arabia to meet with Ukrainian representatives.
The Oval Office meeting on February 28 became contentious when Zelenskyy questioned whether Russian President Vladimir Putin could be trusted in any negotiations to end the war. He pointed to past agreements that Moscow had repeatedly violated before launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
