Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for the creation of a unified European army, warning that the continent can no longer rely on protection from the United States. He argued that a strong, independent military force would earn Europe greater respect from Washington.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Zelenskiy said recent remarks by US Vice President JD Vance highlighted a changing dynamic in transatlantic relations.
“Let’s be honest – now we can’t rule out the possibility that America might say no to Europe on issues that threaten it,” Zelenskiy stated.
He stressed the urgency of establishing a European army, with Ukraine as a member, to secure the continent’s future and ensure that decisions affecting Europe are made within Europe itself.
“Many leaders have talked about a European army, and I truly believe the time has come. The armed forces of Europe must be created,” he said.
Zelenskiy also reaffirmed Ukraine’s refusal to accept any backdoor deal to end the ongoing war with Russia. He predicted that Russian President Vladimir Putin would attempt to invite former US President Donald Trump to Moscow’s May 9 Victory Day parade, not as a respected guest, but as a mere prop in a political performance.
The Ukrainian leader’s call for a unified military underscores growing concerns over Europe’s defense strategy amid uncertainty about continued US support.
