The Yoruba Nation Youths have strongly opposed the introduction of Sharia law and the establishment of Sharia courts in the South-West region, vowing to fiercely resist any attempts to impose such practices. In a statement issued yesterday by the group’s leaders, Messrs Ayodele Ologunloluwa (Diaspora) and Oyegunle Omotoyole (Homebase), the youths expressed their determination to protect their ancestral land from what they termed “destabilization” and foreign influence.
The statement follows recent reports that the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter) is set to inaugurate a Sharia court in Oyo town on January 11, 2025, at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre located at Oba Adeyemi High School Road, Mobolaje area, Agbogangan, Oyo.
The Yoruba Nation Youths, however, dismissed the proposal as “laughable” and made it clear that they would not stand for the imposition of Sharia law in the region. The statement reads, “We will resist any move to impose Sharia law or courts in Yorubaland. Yoruba culture and traditions are distinct, and any attempt to introduce alien laws will be met with fierce opposition.”
The group also warned the Federal Government against actions that could create divisions in the region, stressing that their primary focus remains the self-determination of the Yoruba Nation. “Instead of a Yoruba man prostrating for a Hausa-Fulani, it is better to take courage and die,” the statement continued.
Emphasizing the incompatibility of Sharia law with Yoruba values and way of life, the youths vowed to fight against any attempt to disrupt the peace and unity of the region. “Sharia law is incompatible with our values, culture, and way of life. We will not allow any attempt to disrupt the peace of Yorubaland under the guise of religious imposition.”
The Yoruba Nation Youths reaffirmed their commitment to defending their faith, values, and identity, declaring that they would resist the agenda with all their might.
