Ukraine launched a significant drone assault on Friday, targeting a Russian oil refinery and a microchip factory, causing extensive damage and fires at the refinery’s production facilities and an oil pumping station.
The Russian government stated earlier that its forces had repelled an overnight drone attack. However, multiple industry sources confirmed that one of Russia’s oldest refineries, located in Ryazan, southeast of Moscow, sustained substantial damage during the strike.
The attack reportedly ignited fires at the refinery’s oil storage and damaged critical equipment, including a railway loading rack and a hydrotreater unit used for refining oil products. Video footage shared on social media captured scenes of smoke and flames engulfing the refinery, with panicked residents fleeing the area.
This development highlights Ukraine’s capacity to strike deep within Russian territory as both nations seek to bolster their positions amid the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his intention to bring an end to nearly three years of war in Ukraine, suggesting that peace negotiations could follow the shifting dynamics on the battlefield.
