Two Chinese Nationals Abducted in Agadez by Suspected ISIS Sahel Militants

Two Chinese nationals were abducted during a coordinated attack in Agadez, Niger Republic, by suspected ISIS Sahel militants. The assailants also killed two security personnel from the Garde Nationale du Niger (GNN) during the assault.

The victims, identified as employees of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), were targeted in an attack that highlights the growing threat posed by ISIS Sahel in the region. Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism expert focused on the Lake Chad Basin, shared details of the incident on social media, emphasizing the escalating trend of abductions and killings linked to the extremist group.

Makama noted that the attack is part of a broader pattern of ISIS Sahel targeting foreign nationals, a tactic often used to demand high ransoms or to secure the release of detained group members. Previous high-profile abductions, including those of former petroleum minister Barke Moustapha and Spanish tourists in southern Algeria, have been linked to similar motives.

The ongoing violence has raised concerns about the stability of Niger and the broader Sahel region, with experts warning that the situation could deteriorate further if the extremist group’s influence continues to grow.
