Trump Hints at Possible Russian Takeover of Ukraine, Kremlin Reacts

0

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Ukraine could eventually become part of Russia, a statement likely to be welcomed by the Kremlin amid ongoing efforts to end the war between the two nations.

Speaking in an interview, Trump commented on the possibility of a negotiated settlement, saying: “They may make a deal, they may not make a deal. They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday.”

The remarks come as the U.S. continues to provide military and financial aid to Ukraine, with Trump emphasizing that he wants to see a return on investment, hinting at the possibility of leveraging Ukraine’s rare earth minerals in future trade deals.

The Kremlin swiftly responded to Trump’s comments. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, claimed that some regions of Ukraine have always sought to be part of Russia.

“A significant part of Ukraine wants to become Russia, and the fact that it has already become Russia is undeniable,” Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.

Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has illegally annexed four regions—Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—following widely condemned sham referendums. While Moscow initially expected a swift victory, the war is now entering its fourth year, with Ukraine continuing to resist Russian advances.

Peskov cited the controversial referendums as proof of Ukraine’s supposed willingness to join Russia, claiming that people “stood in line and voted” despite significant risks.

Trump’s remarks signal a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy if he returns to office, raising concerns about the future of American support for Ukraine as the war continues.
