Former U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed media narratives suggesting that tech billionaire Elon Musk wields significant influence over his administration. In a preview of a Fox News interview set to air on Tuesday, Trump mocked the portrayal of Musk as the true power behind the presidency, describing it as an attempt to sow discord between them.
“They do it all the time,” Trump said, mimicking a news anchor’s voice. “We have breaking news: Donald Trump has ceded control of the presidency to Elon Musk. President Musk will be attending a cabinet meeting tonight.”
Trump, known for his sensitivity to being overshadowed, addressed widespread speculation about Musk’s rising profile and potential political influence. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, was appointed to lead the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he has aggressively cut costs and eliminated what he deems unnecessary spending.
The billionaire’s assertive approach has attracted significant media attention, including a Time magazine cover depicting Musk seated at the Resolute Desk and a New Yorker illustration showing Musk and Trump jointly taking the presidential oath of office.
Despite the media buzz, Trump expressed unwavering support for Musk’s work, particularly in light of growing budget deficits.
“Actually, Elon called me,” Trump revealed in the interview. “He said, ‘You know, they’re trying to drive us apart.’ I said, ‘Absolutely.’”
The former president suggested that Americans see through the media’s efforts to create friction.
Musk, known for his outspoken views and business acumen, has yet to publicly respond to the media portrayals. However, his collaboration with Trump in the DOGE initiative remains a focal point as the administration continues to tackle fiscal challenges.
