Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for his role in facilitating the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Speaking at the White House on Tuesday during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump expressed skepticism about receiving the award despite his efforts.

“They will never give me a Nobel Peace Prize. I deserve it, but they will never give it to me,” Trump said when asked if he believed his actions warranted the prestigious honor.

His remarks come after Hamas released three hostages, including American-Israeli dual national Keith Siegel, following a ceasefire agreement brokered between the two sides. The truce, which took effect after 15 months of conflict, has resulted in the release of 18 Israeli hostages and 583 Palestinian prisoners since January 19.

Meanwhile, Hamas confirmed on Tuesday that negotiations for a second phase of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange are underway.

Trump also suggested that the United States should intervene in the Gaza Strip to “level it and rebuild the area,” describing the region as a long-standing “symbol of death and destruction.”
