Trump-Backed DOGE Terminates 586 Contracts, Saves $445 Million for US Government

The United States Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and backed by former President Donald Trump, has announced the termination of 586 wasteful contracts across 10 federal agencies.

In a statement released on its official X account on Saturday, DOGE revealed that the cancelled contracts had a ceiling value of $2.1 billion, resulting in $445 million in savings for the US government.

“Roses are red, violets are blue. Today, DOGE and 10 agencies made 586 wasteful contracts bid adieu! With a ceiling value of $2.1B and $445M in savings secured, a perfect Valentine’s gift for all taxpayers—well-earned and deserved!” the agency wrote in a post.

DOGE highlighted one of the terminated contracts—a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) contract valued at $8.2 million for “environmental compliance services for the implementation of pilot projects developed under the partnership for climate-smart commodities.”

The move aligns with DOGE’s mission to reduce government spending, curb fraud, and enhance operational efficiency within federal agencies.

Targeted Agencies

DOGE has been actively reviewing several key federal agencies in recent weeks. Among the agencies under scrutiny are the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Education.

The reforms reflect Trump’s ongoing efforts to reduce what his administration has described as “excessive government expenditure” while improving public sector accountability.

The agency, which has garnered significant attention since its launch, continues to push for more efficient resource allocation across federal institutions.

Observers have commended the cost-cutting initiative, while critics argue that the sweeping contract cancellations may disrupt critical government programs.

As the US approaches the next fiscal year, DOGE has indicated its intention to intensify reviews across additional agencies to identify and eliminate further instances of financial mismanagement.
