The Russian Defence Ministry announced on Thursday that its forces had seized control of the village of Andriivka in eastern Ukraine, marking another step in Moscow’s slow but steady advance through the Donetsk region.
According to the ministry, Andriivka—located west of the strategic logistics hub of Kurakhove, which Russia claimed in early January—has now fallen under its control.
However, Ukraine’s military did not confirm the village’s capture. In a late-night report, the General Staff stated that Andriivka was among five settlements targeted in 17 Russian assaults on Ukrainian defensive positions in the Pokrovsk sector. The report added that at least one armed clash was still ongoing late into the evening.
Since its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has focused on securing the eastern Donbas region, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk. Moscow reportedly controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory and has been methodically pushing westward, capturing villages in its bid to tighten its grip on the region.
