Moscow has expelled two British diplomats, accusing them of espionage, as tensions between Russia and the United Kingdom escalate.
In a statement on Monday, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) labeled the UK as the “main instigator” of global conflicts, drawing parallels to Britain’s role in the lead-up to both World Wars.
“As we can see, London today, just as it did on the eve of both world wars of the last century, acts as the main ‘instigator’ of global conflict,” the SVR stated, adding that Russia intends to send a “clear signal” to Britain and its leadership.
The expulsion follows Moscow’s decision to revoke the accreditation of the two British nationals, a man and a woman, who were accused of spying. The UK government has yet to officially respond to the allegations.
