Seoul, South Korea – Supporters of embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol stormed a courthouse early on Sunday after his detention was extended, leading to violent clashes with law enforcement. The protesters broke windows and forced their way inside the building, an attack described as “unimaginable” by the country’s acting president.
Yoon, who was arrested on Wednesday, became the first sitting South Korean president to face arrest amid allegations of insurrection linked to his controversial December 3 declaration of martial law. The decision plunged the nation into significant political turmoil.
The confrontation occurred shortly after the court announced its decision around 3 a.m. local time. A crowd of Yoon’s supporters overwhelmed riot police stationed outside the courthouse, using fire extinguishers to disperse officers guarding the entrance. They then flooded into the building, damaging office equipment, furniture, and other fixtures, as seen in footage from the scene.
Police regained control of the situation hours later, arresting 46 individuals involved in the unrest. Authorities vowed to continue tracking down additional suspects.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok condemned the violent protests, expressing “strong regret” over the illegal actions, which he called “unimaginable in a democratic society.” He also announced increased security measures for future gatherings.
In the aftermath, nine police officers were reported injured, along with approximately 40 others who sustained minor injuries during the chaos.
