OTTAWA, March 4 – Mark Carney, Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, has issued a strong response to the ongoing trade tensions with the United States, vowing that Canada will emerge victorious.
Following his decisive leadership victory on Sunday, the 59-year-old former central banker addressed the nation, condemning the latest round of U.S. tariffs and reaffirming Canada’s commitment to defending its economy.
“Make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win,” Carney declared.
His remarks come after Canada imposed a 25 percent tariff on $30 billion worth of U.S. imports in response to new levies approved by President Donald Trump. Carney accused the Trump administration of “attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses,” vowing to stand firm against economic pressure.
“We face dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust,” he said. “We need to pull together in the tough days ahead.”
Carney secured a commanding 85.9% of the vote in the Liberal Party’s leadership race, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. He is set to be sworn in as Prime Minister in the coming days, succeeding Justin Trudeau.
In his victory speech, Carney thanked Trudeau for his “hard work, leadership, and great service to our country,” and urged Canadians to unite as he prepares to lead the nation through economic challenges.
“Thank you. Now let’s build a stronger Canada, together,” he posted on X.
