French President Emmanuel Macron publicly corrected former U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday during Oval Office talks, clarifying the nature of Europe’s financial support to Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.
As Trump began discussing European aid, he claimed, “Europe is loaning the money to Ukraine. They are getting their money back,” suggesting that European nations were shielding themselves financially while the U.S. was left uncompensated.
Macron quickly interrupted, reaching over to touch Trump’s arm and offering a direct correction. “No, in fact, to be frank, we paid. We paid 60% of the total effort. It was like the U.S.: loans, guarantees, grants,” Macron said, emphasizing Europe’s significant financial commitment.
The French president further clarified, “We have $230 billion in frozen Russian assets in Europe. But this is not collateral for a loan because it does not belong to us. They are simply frozen.”
Despite Macron’s clarification, Trump appeared unconvinced, responding, “If you believe that, it’s OK with me. They get their money back, and we don’t. But now we do.”
Macron’s visit aimed to reinforce France’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine. “For sovereignty and freedom. Our support for Ukraine will remain unwavering,” Macron posted on X, underscoring his dedication to the cause.
