Former U.S. President Donald Trump has ignited fresh debate over America’s stance on Ukraine, suggesting the country “might not survive” its ongoing war with Russia.
In an interview with Fox News aired on Sunday, Trump was asked whether he was comfortable with halting U.S. aid to Ukraine, despite concerns it could impact the country’s survival. He responded, “Well, it might not survive anyway.”
Addressing the more than three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Trump stated, “It takes two to engage in a conflict,” adding, “So now we are stuck with this mess.”
Under Trump’s leadership, the U.S. government has made a dramatic shift in its Ukraine policy, recently suspending support for Kyiv in an effort to push Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy into peace negotiations. Trump has previously placed blame on Zelenskyy for the war, accusing him of reluctance to seek an end to the conflict.
During a White House meeting, tensions between the two leaders reportedly escalated in front of the global media, with Trump labeling Zelenskyy a “dictator.” While their relations have since improved, U.S. military aid to Ukraine remains on hold.
Trump’s approach has been widely viewed as favoring Russia, but he has rejected claims of aligning with Moscow, insisting that he has been “tougher than anyone” on Russia.
