Ghana’s Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed two bids to overturn the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which severely limits LGBTQ rights. The bill, passed by lawmakers in February, includes jail terms of up to three years for engaging in LGBTQ sex.
The court ruled that it could not intervene until the bill receives presidential assent from outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who has not yet announced his decision. Akufo-Addo had previously stated he would wait for the court’s ruling on the bill’s constitutionality before making a final decision.
The bill has sparked international condemnation, including from the United States, and raised concerns over potential economic repercussions, with Ghana’s finance ministry warning of possible losses in World Bank funding.
