French Prime Minister Warns Europe of Risk of Marginalization Under Trump’s Leadership

French Prime Minister François Bayrou issued a stark warning on Monday, emphasizing that France and Europe face the risk of being dominated, marginalized, and crushed if they do not take decisive action to counter the policies of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump ahead of his inauguration.

Speaking in Pau, where he serves as mayor, Bayrou criticized the incoming administration’s approach to the dollar, industry, and investment, describing it as “incredibly dominating.” He underscored that without a proactive response from Europe, the continent’s fate would be clear: “We will be dominated, we will be crushed, we will be marginalized.” Bayrou stressed that Europe must act together, stating, “It is up to us, French and Europeans, as it is impossible without Europe.”

The Prime Minister further argued that Trump’s inauguration forces Europe to confront its role in global geopolitics, referencing the growing influence of China as a key factor in shaping future international dynamics. His remarks echo earlier statements from French President Emmanuel Macron, who has called for Europe to achieve “strategic autonomy” and reduce its dependence on the United States, particularly in defense matters.

Bayrou’s comments reflect an increasingly assertive stance on both foreign and domestic policy since his appointment as Prime Minister by Macron in late 2024, tasked with resolving a political crisis within the country.

Trump is set to be sworn in for a historic second term later on Monday, promising a “golden age” for the United States, as the world anticipates the return of his unpredictable leadership. Among the prominent French political figures attending the inauguration are Éric Zemmour and his partner, Sarah Knafo, leaders of the far-right Reconquête! party. Zemmour, who received seven percent of the vote in the 2022 French presidential elections, is seen as one of the most vocal advocates of far-right politics in France.
