Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has died at the age of 100. The Carter Center announced his passing in a brief statement, confirming he died peacefully on Sunday in Plains, Georgia.

The former president had been receiving hospice care at his home since February. His death comes just over a month after the passing of his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who died on November 19 at the age of 96. Despite his frailty, Carter attended her memorial service in a wheelchair, a testament to their enduring bond.

Carter, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and member of a prominent Georgia farming family, entered politics after serving in the Navy. He held office as a state senator and later as governor of Georgia before winning the presidency in 1976. His victory over incumbent Gerald Ford in a closely contested election marked the beginning of his single term in office, which spanned from January 1977 to January 1981.

Throughout his life, Carter remained committed to public service, advocating for peace, human rights, and democracy through the Carter Center, which he founded in 1982. His contributions to global humanitarian efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
