Thousands of Nigerian workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) converged at Eagle Square, Abuja, on Thursday to celebrate the 2025 May Day in grand style.
This year’s celebration comes on the heels of a major policy shift by the Federal Government, which recently approved an increase in the national minimum wage to ₦70,000 under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The wage hike followed months of agitation triggered by the removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023.
Despite the upward review, labour leaders and workers alike continue to call for a further increase, citing the prevailing high inflation and rising cost of living in the country.
The annual event, held globally on May 1st to honour the contributions of workers to national development, saw a massive turnout at the federal capital. The atmosphere at Eagle Square was charged with enthusiasm as workers chanted solidarity songs and paraded in colourful, branded attire representing their various unions.
As of the time of this report, it remained unclear whether President Tinubu would make a personal appearance or delegate a representative to attend the ceremony.
