“Women’s Rights Groups Demand Justice for Detained Activist Chioma Okoli”

0

A coalition of women’s rights organizations, Womanifesto, is demanding the immediate release of Chioma Okoli, who has been detained since September 2023 over alleged defamation against Erisco Foods Limited.

In a statement endorsed by more than 150 groups, including the Women Advocates and Research Documentation Centre (WARDC), Purple Woman Foundation, and ActionAid Nigeria, the coalition condemned Okoli’s continued detention, which they claim has led to her losing both her pregnancy and livelihood.

The coalition also criticized Erisco Foods for allegedly prioritizing profits over the health and wellbeing of Nigerians. They called on the government to launch an investigation into the company’s products and labeling practices.

The statement further demanded justice for Okoli and an end to the harassment and intimidation of women who speak out against injustices.
