Abuja, March 11, 2025 – The controversy surrounding Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan took a new turn on Tuesday as several women’s groups publicly apologized to the Senate over the sexual harassment allegations leveled by Akpoti-Uduaghan against Akpabio.
Under the aegis of the Nigerian Women Crusade for Good Governance (NWCGG), the groups addressed a press briefing in Abuja, expressing regret over what they described as an “embarrassment” to Nigerian women and female politicians.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, NWCGG leader Cecilia Ikechukwu stated that the controversy had undermined the efforts of women striving to earn trust and respect in the political sphere. She also claimed that Akpoti-Uduaghan has a history of making such allegations against men in positions of power.
“Senate President Akpabio has been a strong advocate for women’s inclusion in politics. It is unfortunate that this situation has cast a negative light on female politicians who have worked hard to break barriers,” Ikechukwu said.
The group also urged Akpoti-Uduaghan to use her suspension as an opportunity to study Senate rules and better understand legislative processes.
“She must take this time to learn and return as a more responsible and respectful leader. Her actions must not define women in governance—we must continue to prove that female leaders are capable and deserving of positions of authority,” the statement read.
Reaffirming their commitment to good governance and women’s empowerment, the NWCGG called on female politicians to conduct themselves with dignity, stating that leadership comes with the responsibility to inspire future generations.
Meanwhile, Akpoti-Uduaghan has rejected her six-month suspension, describing it as unjust. While reports initially suggested that the suspension was linked to her allegations against Akpabio, the Senate later clarified that she was penalized for violating its rules.
Her legal challenge against the Senate’s decision is set to be heard on March 25, 2025.
