In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Arc (Mrs.) Margaret Adesuwa Ehilebo, the Women for Change Vanguard has called for accountability in the ongoing controversy surrounding sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
“We stand at a critical juncture in our fight against sexual harassment and misconduct. The recent claims made by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senator Akpabio raise serious concerns that warrant scrutiny,” Ehilebo stated.
The group underscored the importance of due process in cases of alleged misconduct, emphasizing that the burden of proof rests with the accuser.
“If Senator Natasha claims to have been a victim of sexual harassment, we urge her to come forward with credible evidence. The gravity of such claims necessitates accountability,” Ehilebo added.
The Women for Change Vanguard also expressed concern over what it described as a troubling misuse of the #BelieveAllWomen movement, warning that baseless accusations could harm both the accused and genuine survivors of sexual violence.
“This is not the first time Senator Natasha has made serious allegations against a prominent figure. Such actions risk becoming a weapon against men in power, ultimately undermining the fight against sexual violence,” Ehilebo stated.
The group cautioned that false allegations not only damage reputations but also weaken the credibility of legitimate cases, urging transparency from both parties involved.
“We call on Senator Natasha to present concrete evidence against Senator Godswill Akpabio. Should such evidence be provided, we will stand firm in ensuring justice is served,” Ehilebo affirmed.
The organization has announced plans for a protest aimed at demanding transparency and accountability from both sides, stressing the importance of integrity in the fight against sexual misconduct.
“Senator Akpabio must clear his name, while Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan must present substantial evidence regarding her allegations. We must not be perceived as weak. Instead, we must embody strength and resilience, particularly in the workplace and beyond,” Ehilebo concluded.
The Women for Change Vanguard is calling on supporters to join the protest and participate in constructive discussions about justice, accountability, and the fight against sexual harassment.
