…Says party not for sale, warns against leadership usurpation
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), under the leadership of Chief Wole Adesina, has raised the alarm over what it described as two troubling developments threatening the party’s unity and integrity.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Mohammed, condemned what he called a desperate alliance of aggrieved politicians seeking to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu without offering a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.
Mohammed stated, “The influx of some aggrieved politicians in a desperate coalition to ‘send President Bola Ahmed Tinubu back to Lagos’ without showcasing any clear-cut alternative agenda for Nigeria’s transformation is unacceptable. The SDP is not for sale or lease to any group and will not be part of any anti-government plots that lack a coherent developmental plan for the country.”
While affirming its commitment to holding the federal government accountable through constructive engagement, the Adesina-led faction distanced itself from any opposition alliance allegedly attempting to undermine the Tinubu administration or challenge the mandate given by Nigerian voters in the 2023 general elections.
The statement also addressed internal strife within the SDP, warning against attempts by a rival faction—allegedly working with the coalition group—to replace duly elected state executives. The NEC described such moves as illegal and likened the current situation to the 2019 crisis when former PDP members led by Prof. Jerry Gana attempted a leadership takeover, resulting in the resignation of former National Chairman Olu Falae and a prolonged legal battle.
Mohammed called on SDP leaders nationwide to resist efforts to usurp their positions and urged them to report any such incidents to the appropriate authorities. He also encouraged members to remain calm as the party continues its efforts to reclaim full recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“Our doors remain open to genuinely committed new members,” Mohammed added, stressing the importance of discipline, legality, and unity as the party navigates its internal challenges.
