Rwandan President Paul Kagame has announced his intention to seek for a fourth term in next year’s elections. In an interview published online on Tuesday, Kagame told Jeune Afrique, a French-language news magazine.
The 65-year-old, who has ruled the country with an iron fist for decades, declared, “Yes, I am indeed a candidate.”
“I am pleased with the trust that Rwandans have placed in me,” Kagame was reported as adding. “As long as I am able, I will always serve them.”
The Rwandan government agreed in March to synchronize the dates of its legislative and presidential elections, which are scheduled for August of next year.
Previously, Rwanda’s President had not made his intentions apparent, but he has overseen over contentious constitutional modifications that have permitted him to serve a third term.
Kagame has been considered as the country’s de facto leader since the conclusion of the 1994 genocide.
In 2017, the former rebel chief won a third term with nearly 99 percent of the vote.
