The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has declared that individuals arrested for vandalizing sewage manhole covers on Abuja highways will face stringent legal consequences. The minister emphasized that such measures aim to deter potential offenders and safeguard public infrastructure.
Wike issued the warning through a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, on Monday. He reiterated that buyers and users of stolen manhole covers and other vandalized public amenities would also be arrested and prosecuted for economic sabotage and endangering public safety.
Commending the swift and decisive actions of security agencies, Wike described their efforts as “fantastic,” assuring residents of the capital city that their lives and properties are well-protected. He also praised Nigerians for speaking out against vandalism and stressed that safeguarding public infrastructure is a shared responsibility.
“Those stealing and buying amenities meant for Nigerians are Nigerians themselves. They live among us, and they are known. It is therefore important that patriotic Nigerians begin to expose them even before they carry out their devilish acts,” the minister stated.
So far, security agencies have arrested 50 suspected vandals for the theft of manhole covers within the FCT. Additionally, 25 stolen covers have been recovered.
Wike reiterated his commitment to ensuring a safer and more secure FCT, warning that all offenders will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
