The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has expressed strong confidence in the resilience and eventual recovery of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite its ongoing internal challenges.
Wike made the statement in Abuja on Monday while hosting a high-level meeting of party leaders and loyalists under the banner of the Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP. The gathering brought together party stalwarts from all 36 states of the federation and the FCT.
Prominent attendees included former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), alongside PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former Senate Minority Leader Senator Philip Aduda. Also present were former federal and state lawmakers, as well as several zonal and state party executives.
Addressing the stakeholders, Wike praised their unwavering commitment to the PDP and described them as the true defenders of the party’s future.
“All of you here are those who are committed to the survival of our party — not just by talking on television or in newspapers, but by working actively for the party at various levels,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor highlighted the controversial but decisive role played by the G5 Governors in the 2023 general elections, insisting that their actions helped prevent national instability.
“You may like us or hate us, but the truth is if the G5 had not taken the decision we took, this country would have been in crisis,” he stated. “It doesn’t matter who benefited; what mattered was doing the right thing — and we still stand by that decision.”
Wike criticized elements within the PDP for ignoring calls to uphold the party’s constitution and values, warning that continued impunity, greed, and ego could further fracture the opposition.
“As an opposition party, we should not act with impunity. Ours is to pacify people, rebuild trust, and desist from driving loyal members away. Let us not allow ego and greed to destroy the PDP,” he cautioned.
He called on stakeholders to refocus on unity, constitutional order, and inclusive leadership to ensure the PDP remains a viable political force.
The meeting is seen as a significant step toward reconciliation and rebuilding ahead of future elections, with many observers noting the renewed push for internal reforms and unity within the party.
