Abuja — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must uphold the outcome of its South-South zonal congress for peace to return to the party.
Speaking during his monthly media parley in Abuja on Monday, Wike made it clear that the congress, which held in Calabar, Cross River State, must be recognized without question. He emphasized that the court had affirmed the legitimacy of the process, leaving no room for further disputes.
“Our South-South zonal congress that was held must be upheld. There’s no doubt, no two words about it,” Wike stated.
The former Rivers State governor criticized the position earlier taken by the party’s Acting National Chairman, who allegedly claimed that PDP governors did not support the zonal congress. Wike questioned the whereabouts and silence of PDP governors during the congress, asserting that the exercise had the backing of party stakeholders from the region.
“If they want another round of passes, so be it. Our congress held and Chief Dan Orbi emerged as the National Vice Chairman (South-South). The court allowed it to hold, and there’s nothing anybody can tell us,” Wike added.
The Minister’s remarks come amid ongoing internal tensions within the PDP, with factions divided over leadership and zoning arrangements ahead of the 2027 general elections. Wike’s insistence on the recognition of the South-South congress is seen as a firm condition for reconciliation within the party ranks.
The PDP has yet to officially respond to Wike’s demands.
