The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that the impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, would not constitute a criminal offence if due process is followed.
Speaking during a media chat on Wednesday, Wike stressed that if Fubara had committed any impeachable offence, the necessary legislative procedures should be carried out. He also expressed frustration over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law.
The FCT Minister further criticized individuals within the governor’s inner circle, stating, “Politics is not play. If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offence.”
Wike’s comments come amid heightened political tensions following a 48-hour ultimatum issued to Governor Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, to re-present the 2025 budget.
The directive follows a Supreme Court ruling by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, which reinstated the 27 lawmakers who had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ordering them to resume legislative functions immediately.
