“Where Is the 24/7 Power?” — ADC Confronts Tinubu Over National Blackout

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for failing to deliver on his campaign promise of providing Nigerians with uninterrupted electricity, accusing him of presiding over a deepening power crisis.

In a strongly worded statement posted on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter), the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said more than 90 million Nigerians still live without access to electricity, despite President Tinubu’s earlier vow to ensure 24-hour power supply within four years of assuming office.

“Today, we just want to take some time to remind President Tinubu that he promised Nigerians uninterrupted electricity within four years. Yes, that’s right—Mr. President promised us 24/7 power. All by himself,” the statement read.

Abdullahi accused the administration of failing to act decisively to improve electricity access, noting that electricity tariffs have surged by 240% since Tinubu took office, while the national grid has collapsed 12 times during the same period.

“Over 90 million Nigerians still lack electricity, and those who do have access only enjoy four to six hours per day. In many rural areas, millions of families remain completely off the grid,” he said.

He further lamented the lack of meaningful reforms or a clear roadmap to address the sector’s longstanding issues, adding that millions of Nigerians continue to rely on fuel-guzzling generators and mobile kiosks just to charge their phones.

“We are past the halfway mark of this administration, and there is no sense of urgency. Nigerians have not forgotten the President’s promise to fix electricity or not expect votes in return,” he stated.

The ADC concluded by calling on President Tinubu to explain the government’s failure to improve power supply and demanded to know how much longer Nigerians must wait for reliable electricity.
