Vice President Kashim Shettima has paid a condolence visit to Aisha Buhari, the widow of former President Muhammadu Buhari, following the statesman’s death in London on Sunday at the age of 82.
Shettima, who is leading the Federal Government delegation tasked with repatriating Buhari’s remains to Nigeria, also met with members of the late President’s family, including his children.
Images from the visit, now circulating on social media, show the Vice President with the grieving family in an atmosphere of solemn reflection.
The former President died in a London hospital where he had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. His passing marks the end of an era for a man who served Nigeria both as a military Head of State and as a democratically elected President.
Throughout his presidency, Buhari was known for his frequent medical visits to the United Kingdom, spending a total of 225 days abroad for treatment. His longest single medical stay lasted 104 days in 2017.
Vice President Shettima and the government delegation are expected to return to Nigeria with the late President’s remains on Tuesday. His burial has been scheduled for the same day in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
