United States Vice President JD Vance has stated that international students on visas could face deportation if deemed not in the best interest of the country.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance emphasized that the administration of President Donald Trump is intensifying efforts to remove illegal migrants and expects deportation numbers to rise.
Trump, he noted, has been dissatisfied with the pace of deportations and is pushing for a more aggressive approach. When asked whether legally admitted foreign students could also be affected, Vance confirmed that they might, framing it as a national security measure.
“This is not fundamentally about free speech,” he said. “Yes, it’s about national security, but more importantly, it’s about who we, as an American public, decide gets to join our national community. If the Secretary of State and the President determine that someone shouldn’t be in America and they have no legal right to stay, it’s as simple as that.”
Vance further criticized the presence of international students in top-tier universities, suggesting they occupy spots that could otherwise go to American students.
The remarks signal a potential shift in U.S. immigration policy under the Trump administration, with stricter scrutiny on visa holders, including students.
