Pope Francis, the 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church, continues to receive treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital as he battles a polymicrobial respiratory infection. The Vatican, on Monday, confirmed that the Pope’s hospitalization, which began on Friday due to bronchitis, will last longer than initially expected due to a “complex clinical picture.”
Medical tests revealed a multi-pathogen infection affecting the Pope’s respiratory tract, prompting adjustments to his treatment plan. “All the tests carried out so far are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require adequate hospitalization,” the Vatican said in an official statement.
Despite the health challenges, Pope Francis has remained active. On Monday morning, he received the Eucharist and later spent time reading and attending to some work. His condition, the Vatican reported, remains stable with no signs of fever.
The Pope, known for his resilience in the face of health setbacks, has been deeply moved by the outpouring of support from around the world.
This recent hospitalization adds to a series of health concerns in recent years, raising concerns about the Pontiff’s ability to maintain his demanding schedule.
The Vatican has assured the public of regular updates on Pope Francis’ health as he continues his recovery.
