University lauds FCT Minister’s contributions to education, national development

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has announced plans to confer an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree (DSc Honoris Causa) on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation and contributions to the institution’s growth.

The conferment will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, during the university’s 35th Convocation Ceremony, which is part of its 50th-anniversary celebration.

Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, made this known on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to Wike’s residence in Abuja, where he personally presented the official letter of conferment.

He described Wike as a distinguished alumnus whose legacy is visible across the institution and beyond.

“You are being honoured not only for your national service but also for your unwavering support to the University of Port Harcourt,” Prof. Georgewill said. “Your footprints are boldly etched in the development of the university.”

The decision was formally conveyed in a letter dated June 10 by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs. Gloria Chinda, who cited Wike’s visionary leadership and impactful governance in Rivers State and Nigeria at large as key reasons for the honour.

“The Senate of the University, at its Extra-Ordinary meeting held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, resolved to confer on you the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa),” the letter stated.

UNIPORT’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, praised Wike for his consistent support for the university at different stages of his political career.

“From your time as Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government to your tenure as Minister of Education and Governor of Rivers State, you have shown unwavering commitment to the university,” Ohuabunwa said.

He highlighted Wike’s pivotal role in establishing and building the university’s Faculty of Law, creating a distinct Faculty of Social Sciences, and constructing a world-class Convocation Arena—now considered one of the best in West Africa.

Ohuabunwa also disclosed that the new convocation arena will be officially inaugurated on Friday, July 25, a day before the convocation ceremony.

In his response, Wike expressed deep appreciation for the honour, describing UNIPORT as the foundation of his academic and political journey.

“This university gave me everything,” he said. “I studied Political Science and later Law here. I am forever proud to be an alumnus.”

The former Rivers State Governor pledged to continue supporting the university and the cause of education in Nigeria.

“If I am ever in a position to do more, I will not hesitate. I accept this honour on behalf of my family and loved ones, and I will be present to celebrate the university’s golden jubilee.”

UNIPORT’s 50th anniversary celebrations are expected to attract prominent alumni, dignitaries, and stakeholders from across the country.
