It has been established that Sanni Hameedah, a female student in her 300s at the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), committed suicide because she was unable to repay a loan of N500,000 she had taken out from various online financial companies across the nation.
The medical professionals at the school clinic, where the 20-year-old girl was transported after committing suicide in her dorm, declared her dead.
She was allegedly found on Wednesday drinking a bottle of the insecticide Sniper after her roommate, who had gone to bed early, awoke in the middle of the night to find her in pain and brought the student to the hospital.
Hameedah was said to have passed away before being taken to the school clinic, a claim that was confirmed by the clinic’s on-staff doctors, who labelled her as Brought-In-Dead (BID).
It was learned that the event happened due to ongoing harassment from multiple online loan apps from which she had obtained the sum of N500,000.
It was discovered that the deceased gave the money to her online partner, whom she had met through the Snapchat app after he convinced her that his mother was ill and needed money for medical attention.
According to reports, she took out a loan from him to pay for his mother’s care at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he said she had breast cancer.
The deceased internet lover apparently stopped answering her phone days after receiving the money and later banned her number in an effort to escape payback.
The management of the private hostel where the deceased resided before her death, Rubiks, said in a statement that the app agents had put pressure on her to repay the money, which was what caused her action.
According to Ologundudu Adesunkanmi, President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Unilorin, who confirmed the occurrence, “The Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs have notified the relevant authorities to initiate a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.”
Her fellow college students, who are familiar with the situation, reported that she had made suicide threats since last week when administrators of the loan apps resorted to texting her friends, family, and parents derogatory comments.
According to reports, late Hameedah became deeply in debt over a loan from the apps that was due in April 2023 and later offset without her parent’s knowledge.
