U.S. Resume Student Visa Interviews Amid Tighter Security Checks on Social Media

The United States government has announced plans to resume scheduling visa interviews for international students under the F, M, and J nonimmigrant classifications, following a temporary suspension in May.

In a new directive issued by the U.S. State Department, foreign student and exchange visitor applicants will now undergo more rigorous screening procedures, including mandatory reviews of their online presence.

“All applicants for F, M, and J visas will be instructed to set their social media profiles to public,” the department’s spokesperson revealed in a statement. “We use all available information in our visa screening and vetting to identify applicants who are inadmissible to the United States, including those who pose a threat to U.S. national security.”

Describing a visa as a “privilege, not a right,” the department emphasized that every visa adjudication is considered a national security decision. The move aims to ensure that individuals entering the U.S. do not intend to compromise the safety of Americans or national interests.

The department advised applicants to check their respective embassy or consulate websites for updates on appointment availability. It also reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of public safety through a robust visa process.

Nigeria remains the leading source of African students in the United States, with approximately 20,000 currently enrolled in various institutions. Globally, Nigeria ranks 17th in terms of international student population in the U.S.

The new vetting procedures form part of broader efforts by the U.S. government to strengthen border security while continuing to attract qualified international students.
