The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the escape of two suspects allegedly involved in the kidnapping and murder of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Azuka, who represented Onitsha 1 Constituency, was laid to rest over the weekend in his hometown, Onitsha. However, reports of the suspects’ escape had been circulating before being officially confirmed by the police.

In a statement on Monday, February 18, the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that efforts were underway to rearrest the fugitives. He added that disciplinary action would be taken against any officers found culpable in the incident.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspects had been assisting police operatives in an operation to track down a key accomplice and recover stolen vehicles linked to the crime. While the alleged receiver of the stolen vehicles was arrested and two vehicles recovered, the two suspects managed to flee.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu has since deployed intelligence and tactical teams to recapture the escapees. He assured the public of the command’s commitment to bringing all involved to justice, emphasizing that any officers found negligent would face strict disciplinary measures.

The police urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could aid in the suspects’ re-arrest.
