Two individuals, Mohammed Sheu and Abubakar Umar, have been arrested by the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Ondo State Police Command in connection with the killing of Excel Alaba, campaign coordinator for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa during the 2024 election.
Alaba, who was murdered in April 2024 in Supare Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area, was a ward campaign coordinator for the Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot-Soldiers (LACO-SF). According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the suspects were involved in several kidnappings in the Akoko region and neighboring states.
The arrest followed a stop-and-search operation on November 14, 2024, at Ikare Junction, where a vehicle carrying passengers to Owo was intercepted. One of the suspects, Abubakar Umar, confessed to the crime and identified other gang members involved. The suspects also revealed that their modus operandi involved abducting victims from their homes, taking them into the bush, and demanding ransom.
The suspects have admitted to their role in the kidnapping that led to Alaba’s death.
