WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed the possibility of offering Ukraine security guarantees or NATO membership, asserting that the alliance was a key factor in the conflict’s outbreak.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit, Trump confirmed that Zelensky would arrive on Friday to finalize an agreement transferring rare earth materials to the U.S. amid mounting pressure from Washington.
When asked about potential concessions to end the war, Trump was firm in rejecting Ukraine’s NATO bid. “NATO you can forget about. I think that’s probably the reason the whole thing started,” he said.
Trump maintained that his diplomatic strategy was fostering a new willingness to negotiate from Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he claimed had initially sought complete control over Ukraine.
