President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that the United States is raking in $2 billion per day from tariffs, a statement made during an event at the White House without further elaboration.
Since returning to office on January 20 for a second term, Trump has reimposed a broad range of tariffs on multiple countries, a move he says is boosting U.S. revenue.
However, data from the U.S. Treasury Department tells a different story. According to the department’s daily statement of deposits and withdrawals from the federal government’s main operating account, revenues from customs and certain excise taxes have averaged about $200 million per day so far this month.
In February—the most recent full month with available data—the Treasury collected approximately $7.25 billion in customs duties.
President Trump noted that the Treasury’s monthly budget statement for March is scheduled to be released on Thursday, and it will provide the latest official revenue figures.
