Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Jay Clayton as the Interim United States Attorney for the influential Southern District of New York (SDNY).
Trump made the announcement on Wednesday night via his Truth Social media platform, praising Clayton’s leadership and expressing confidence in his ability to steer the office during this transitional period.
“I am pleased to announce that Jay Clayton will serve as the Interim United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York,” Trump wrote. “The Southern District needs strong leadership NOW, and I thank Jay for taking on this role while we continue to pursue his Senate confirmation.”
Clayton, who previously served as Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) during Trump’s first term, was first nominated for the SDNY position in November. His nomination reportedly received broad bipartisan support.
The Southern District of New York is one of the most prominent and powerful federal prosecutorial offices in the country. It plays a key role in overseeing financial markets and is known for handling high-profile cases related to public corruption, organized crime, and major financial crimes. The office also safeguards the safety and interests of millions of New Yorkers and the many more who visit the state annually.
Clayton’s return to public service marks a significant move in Trump’s ongoing efforts to shape key federal positions ahead of the 2024 election cycle.
