WASHINGTON D.C. — Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced a breakthrough ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, following days of deadly clashes involving jet fighters, missiles, drones, and artillery strikes between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Trump shared the development on Truth Social, stating:
“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,”
adding that both nations showed “Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the diplomatic victory on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the ceasefire came after extensive negotiations involving him and Vice President J.D. Vance with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and other senior officials.
“The Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site,” Rubio stated.
“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace.”
The ceasefire was announced just hours after Pakistan launched counterstrikes in response to overnight attacks on three of its air bases, pushing the long-standing rivalry between the nations to the brink of full-scale war.
Pakistan’s foreign minister has also confirmed the ceasefire. However, there has been no immediate response from Indian authorities.
