Trump Administration Declassifies Files on MLK Assassination

0

The administration of President Donald Trump has released long-classified government records related to the assassination of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., defying concerns raised by members of King’s family.

The documents, totaling over 230,000 pages, were made public on Monday and offer new insight into the federal government’s investigation into King’s 1968 killing.

“The American people have waited nearly sixty years to see the full scope of the federal government’s investigation into Dr. King’s assassination,” said Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, in a statement. She added that the records were released “with minimal redactions for privacy reasons.”

Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order authorizing the declassification of files related to the high-profile assassinations of the 1960s — including those of President John F. Kennedy (1963), Senator Robert F. Kennedy (1968), and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1968).

In March, the National Archives released records tied to JFK’s assassination, followed by documents on Robert Kennedy’s killing in April. The release of Dr. King’s files marks the latest step in the administration’s efforts to shed light on some of America’s most controversial and historic tragedies.
