The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a fatal accident near Nyanya Bridge on Wednesday, resulting in the destruction of 14 vehicles and multiple casualties.
In a statement issued Wednesday night, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that six victims were pulled from the wreckage but were later confirmed dead at the hospital. Eyewitnesses, however, claim the death toll could be higher.
According to the police, the incident occurred when a heavily loaded Dangote trailer carrying cement lost control while approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA and crashed into stationary vehicles caught in traffic.
“The impact sparked a massive inferno, engulfing 14 vehicles and causing panic as bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety,” the statement read.
Emergency responders, including police operatives, firefighters, and other security agencies, battled thick smoke and intense heat to rescue trapped victims. While six fatalities have been confirmed, several injured victims have been rushed to hospitals across the FCT.
Reports indicate that the National Hospital and Asokoro Hospital are currently overwhelmed with victims of the crash.
Meanwhile, authorities have restored normal traffic flow in the area, urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations.
