A police inspector identified as Maxwell Zabu has reportedly died by suicide in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, under circumstances that remain unclear as investigations continue.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, took place at the residence of Zabu’s principal, the former Chairman of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area. The late inspector was said to have been attached to the former chairman at the time of his death.

Sources disclosed that the case was first reported at the Eagle Island Police Post under the Azikiwe Police Division, Illoabuchi, Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt. Officers from the division have since visited the scene to begin preliminary investigations.

While the exact motive remains unknown, the Rivers State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating that although it is suspected the officer died by suicide, a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the facts.

In a swift response, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for a discreet and comprehensive probe.

Further updates are expected as investigations unfold.
